Pro-choice group calls out Rep. Joe Heck’s false statement ahead of next debate
Washington, D.C. – NARAL Pro-Choice America set the record straight ahead of the October 25 debate in Nevada’s 3rd congressional district. The group calls attention to a false statement made by incumbent Rep. Joe Heck during his last debate with challenger, John Oceguera.
At the October 11 debate, Joe Heck looked into the camera and told the audience in no uncertain terms that he supports a woman’s right to choose in cases of rape, incest and when the life of the woman is in jeopardy. Unfortunately, his voting record does not reflect that claim. On July 31, Heck voted for H.R.3803, a bill banning abortion care after 20 weeks in Washington, D.C. – a proposal that has no exception in cases of rape or incest.
In 2010, more than 188,000 rapes or sexual assaults were reported in the United States.
Joe Heck earned a rating of five percent in NARAL Pro-Choice America’s 2011 Congressional Record on Choice. His record includes votes to eliminate funding for the Title X family-planning program, and support for a bill that would allow hospitals to refuse emergency abortion care, even when a woman’s life is in danger.
NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC has endorsed John Oceguera’s campaign to represent Nevada’s 3rd congressional district.
09.11.12 – Virginia’s anti-choice legislators insist on pushing laws that clearly trample on women’s rights and either humiliate them or deprive them of the medical services that they need.
Earlier this year, they championed the demeaning “transvaginal probe law.”
Now, Virginia’s Governor Bob McDonnell and his anti-choice cronies are backing outrageous new regulations for abortion providers that are impractical, serve absolutely no medical purpose-and ultimately threaten to close clinics down or will force them to rebuild from the ground up.
This Friday, the Virginia Board of Health is being asked to vote on the regulations for a second time-even though the panel already rejected these rules because they were unrealistic and medically unnecessary. The Governor and the rest of the executive branch are acting like the past never happened though, and continue to try to strong-arm the board into advancing these arbitrary regulations.
Among other things, the regulations would force existing reproductive health care facilities to meet architectural standards designed for new hospitals. This makes no medical or logical sense at all, and it would require providers in the state to undergo massive construction or renovations. Hospitals aren’t even required to meet standards this tough.
Virginia abortion providers have been safely caring for women for decades. But it’s clear that Gov. McDonnell and others are less concerned with women’s health than with imposing harsh rules aimed at shutting clinics down.
The Center for Reproductive Rights has been actively fighting against these regulations, but we need your help.
Send Gov. McDonnell a message demanding that he and his anti-choice cronies stop their crusade against women in Virginia and abandon their efforts to adopt these dangerous regulations.
Today, as we celebrate the anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Roe v. Wade, women’s reproductive freedom and health are still under attack.
The Tea Party Congress has moved aggressively to shut down women’s access to reproductive health care and deny women the basic right to choose by targeting their health insurance and key healthcare providers, most notably, Planned Parenthood. In the states, a movement is afoot to make abortions illegal by conferring the status of “personhood” on embryos, and various state legislatures have taken up bills that would erect insurmountable barriers to women exercising their right to choose.
People For the American Way is proud to be partnering with the Silver Ribbon Campaign and an extremely broad coalition of organizations to promote the Virtual March celebrating Trust Women Week.
